Josephson Plasma Resonance in High Temperature Superconductors: A Test of Interlayer Tunneling Theory

Josephson plasma frequency is computed within the interlayer tunneling theory and compared against the experimental results in Tl2Ba2CuOy and La2−xSrxCuO4. It is shown that the theoretical estimates are fully consistent with the recent experiments. Typeset using REVTEX 1 In the Josephson effect [1], the quantum mechanical phases of two superconductors are coupled by the tunneling of the Cooper ...

Enhanced Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ Intrinsic Josephson Junction Stacks

We have investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ intrinsic Josephson junctions at millikelvin temperatures using microwave irradiation. Measurements show that the escape rate for uniformly switching stacks of N junctions is about N times higher than that of a single junction having the same plasma frequency. We argue that this gigantic enhancement of macroscopic quantum tun...

Josephson vortex state across the phase diagram of La2−xSrxCuO4: A magneto-optics study

We present a detailed doping dependent study of the Josephson vortex state in La2−xSrxCuO4 using infrared spectroscopy. A magnetic field as high as 17 tesla, applied along the CuO2 planes, is found to suppress the Josephson plasmon in all measured samples. We find the strongest suppression in samples with dopings close to x=1/8 and attribute this effect to the spontaneous formation of in-plane ...

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling and Resonant Activation of Current Biased Intrinsic Josephson Junctions in Bi-2212

The utilization of a high-Tc superconductor for implementing a superconducting qubit is to be expected. Recent researches on the quantum property of Josephson junctions in high-Tc superconductors indicate that the low energy quasiparticle excitation is weak enough to observe the macroscopic quantum tunneling. Therefore, a detailed study on the quantum property of high-Tc Josephson junctions bec...

Quantum terahertz electrodynamics and macroscopic quantum tunneling in layered superconductors.

We derive a quantum field theory of Josephson plasma waves (JPWs) in layered superconductors, which describes two types of interacting JPW bosonic quanta (one heavy and one lighter). We propose a mechanism of enhancement of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions. Because of the long-range interaction between junctions in layered superconductors, the calcu...
